There is a greater choice of mortgage products for customers able to stump up a deposit worth 25% of a property's value, according to new research from Moneyfacts.

BBC News reports that the research revealed that househunters with this amount of money at their disposal can select from 831 home loan products on the market at present. At the other end of the scale, however, the picture remains markedly different, with options limited for those unable to save for larger deposits.

It was shown that choice was particularly restricted for people without the capacity to offer a deposit worth more

Cleethorpes Pier was under the hammer with a guide price of £400,000. At 335ft (100m), the pier in North East Lincolnshire is one of the shortest in the UK.

Tina Waterfall, of auctioneers Swindells, said the pier - which was built at a cost of £8,000 - had twice been sold in the past for over £1m.

She said the pier could still be bought in the next 28 days if an increased bid was put in. Ms Waterfall said: "It's in the best state of repair it's been in for years. The pier and its pavilion, owned by a local businessman, could now be rented out to tenants if a suitable offer is not received, Ms

The National Landlords Association has responded to the falling rates by urging lenders to improve their deals.

David Cox, policy adviser at the trade body for professional landlords, said: "Our research shows one third of landlords have been unable to expand due to

House prices have risen faster in Aberdeen and Inverness than any other UK cities over the past decade, a survey has suggested.

The Bank of Scotland report said average prices rose by 94% in the Granite City between 2002 and 2012. Inverness saw prices climb by 81%, with Dundee (+73%) and Perth (+70%) also featuring in the top five UK cities. The bank said Aberdeen had particularly sharp increases because of the importance of the oil sector.

According to the survey, cities recorded higher house price growth than the UK average over the past 10 years.

The total amount of late or unpaid rent in England and Wales stood at £326m, according to LSL Property Services.

This was up from £241m in November, represented 10.1% of all rent, and was the highest level since January 2012, it said. However, the average cost of renting a home fell by 0.9% to £734 a month. However, David Newnes, director of LSL, which owns Reeds Rains and Your Move, said that the

Mortgage payments as a proportion of income have fallen by more than two fifths in Scotland in recent years, from a peak of 38% in the fourth quarter of 2007 to 22% in the same period of 2012, according to new Bank of Scotland research.

Lower house prices and reduced mortgage rates have been the main drivers behind the significant improvement in affordability. The average monthly take home wage in Scotland is £1,954 while the average monthly mortgage payment is £424.
