Nuclear bunker for auction in Nottinghamshire!

Nuclear bunker for auction in Nottinghamshire!

A Cold War-era bunker, complete with instructions for what to do during a nuclear attack, is up for auction.

The six-and-a-half acres of land are likely to be the main draw for buyers, but they come with an, almost, hidden extra – a nuclear bunker.

Located four metres below ground in arable fields in Burton Joyce, Nottinghamshire, down a narrow opening, the historic building is up for auction at a guide price of £75,000.

Between 1961 and 1991, the 11 square metre bunker was one of the Royal Observer Corps’ nuclear monitoring posts.

Scattered around the bunker are instructions for staff about what to do prior to and during a fallout, as well as charts monitoring wind speed, wall-mounted communications systems and an asbestos fire blanket.

The auctioneers at Savills Nottingham say this is the first time they have had a nuclear bunker on their books and suggest several things the buyer might want to do with it.

“While the six and a half acres of land are a key attraction, the bunker could be utilised for a number of things, subject to any planning consents required,” says Richard Gadd, from the auctioneers.

“Possible uses could include storage space, conversion to a wine cellar or a recreation of the original bunker.”

Mr Gadd believes that it could also appeal to war enthusiasts.

"You are buying a piece of history and a piece of land as well," he said.

"There is potential to recreate what would have been here back in 1961."

The auction will take place on 26th March.
