Buyers Battle It Out as Wimborne Auction Exceeds Expectations
Symonds & Sampson achieved an impressive 90% success rate at their East Dorset auction on 8 May, with strong interest from both domestic and international buyers creating highly competitive bidding across a range of lots. Throughout the day, bidders battled determinedly to secure properties and land, with several lots exceeding pre-sale expectations.
Auctioneer and Rural Partner George Whittaker commented, “Given the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, we were initially concerned that wider global uncertainty might affect buyer confidence during the marketing campaign. However, those concerns quickly eased as we approached auction day and registrations to bid increased significantly.
“Some of the final sale prices were well ahead of our expectations. Speaking to bidders both before and after the auction, there was a clear feeling that, despite the constant negative news surrounding conflicts in Gaza, Ukraine and tensions involving Iran, people do not want to put their lives on hold. Buyers are still motivated to invest, make plans for the future, and continue living life to the fullest.”
The results underline the continued resilience of the rural property market, with buyers remaining prepared to act decisively when quality opportunities become available.
Auction Partner Meredith Wallis was also pleased to see where the bidders were based, “We had very good local interest as well as bidders from London who we had met when we launched the auction at The London Office. The highest priced property, a house and over fifteen acres at Three Legged Cross, went, after fifty bids, to a buyer in New York, who paid £815,000 - 41% above guide.”
Other notable prices include:
- An apartment in Swanage sold for 24% above guide
- A cottage for renovation near Wareham sold for 6% above guide
- A detached house for renovation and another for improvement in Winterborne Kingston both exceeded expectations
- Land adjoining the River Frome sold at £25,000 per acre
- A small parcel of Woodland near Southampton sold for £5,000
Symonds & Sampson’s property auctions come thick and fast in 2026, and the team invite entries for our auctions in Sherborne and Wimborne in the coming months.
